Based on papers in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, this edition is an edited selection of the correspondence of Wilfrid Spender and his wife Lilian during World War One. He was an army officer and subsequently the responsible for laying the foundations for the civil service of Northern Ireland. He served as Secretary to the Northern Ireland Cabinet (1921-1925) and Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Finance (1925-1944).
