Collection: Achill Island Improvement Fund
Collection Description | The Achill Island Improvement Fund was set up in the wake of the disaster in May, 1894 when 34 islanders en route for harvest work in Scotland drowned when their overladen hooker, the Victory, capsized. The Dublin Corporation fund was intended to ensure an end to the seasonal migration of the islanders in search of work. Little money was in fact collected, but the collection is of interest for several reasons, first among which is that the Fund in intent and purpose, is a forerunner of the Congested Districts Board. |
