Collection Description | James Lynch (1807-1896) was born in Dublin to Joseph Lynch, M.D., and Mary Anne Scurlog. Dr Lynch studied for the
priesthood at Maynooth and was ordained in 1833 for the Order of St Vincent de Paul, which merged with the Congregation of
the Mission (Vincentian Fathers). He served as a Professor and Vice President of Vincentian College, Castleknock, Dublin for
many years. In October 1858, Dr Lynch was appointed Rector of Irish College, Paris. He became Coadjutor Vicar Apostolic of the
Western District of Scotland in 1866 before being appointed Coadjutor to Dr James Walshe, Bishop of Kildare & Leighlin (1803-
1888), in 1869. Dr Lynch became Bishop in 1888 following Dr Walshe’s death. Dr Lynch lived in Tullow, Co. Carlow, for much of
