Collection Description | Donated to Laois County Library by the Redmond family in 2002, to mark the 25th
anniversary of
the death of Terry
Redmond, a popular professional photographer based in Portlaoise from the 1950s to the
1970s.
The collection is
significant and comprises over 300 images documenting local, social and family history and
recording significant local
sites and events in Laois.
The complete Redmond archive comprises approximately 300,000 negatives, the majority of
which
relate to County Laois,
and to Portlaoise in particular. It is likely to be the largest pictorial record of any regional Irish
town.
The archive is
maintained by Terry Redmond’s son, Brian, a professional photographer based in Roscrea.
The collection also includes images from 50/50 Vision, an exhibition that illustrated changing
Portlaoise streetscapes over
a century, by juxtaposing photographs taken by Brian in the early 2000s with those captured
by
Terry in the 1960s and the
Eason Collection, dating from the early 1900s. |
