| Collection Description | Beginning in Norman times, Grand Juries consisted of local landowners, who were chosen
by the Sheriff of the
County. Grand
Juries were discharged by the Judge of Assize. Presentment sessions were called in each
of the six baronies of
Donegal before
the Assizes, and this was where proposals for work to be undertaken were considered and
submitted to the
Grand Jury for
ratification. Grand Jury Cess, a rate payable by occupiers, paid for services in the county;
this included the
making and
maintenance of roads and bridges, the building of courthouses, and the provision of support
to schools, district
hospitals, and
prisons. |
