Collection Description | Dr James Walshe (1803-1888) was consecrated Bishop of Kildare & Leighlin at the Cathedral of the Assumption, Carlow, in 1856.
He was born in New Ross, Co. Wexford to Philip Walshe and Mary Doyle. Dr Walshe studied for the priesthood at St Peter’s
College, Wexford, and at Carlow College, St Patrick’s, from where he was ordained for Kildare & Leighlin in 1830. He was on the
teaching staff of Carlow College (1830-1837) before becoming a curate (1837-1842) and then Administrator of Cathedral Parish,
Carlow (1842- c 1843/1844). Dr Walshe acted as Secretary to Dr Francis Haly (c 1783/1787-1855), then Bishop, while he held
Cathedral parish assignments. He rejoined the staff of Carlow College and was appointed President in 1850. He held this position
until his appointment as Bishop and had also some time earlier been appointed Vicar General. Due to declining health, Dr
Walshe petitioned to have a Coadjutor Bishop appointed, and Dr James Lynch was appointed in 1869. Dr Walshe died on 5
March 1888. (delanyarchive.ie) |
