Collection DescriptionWaterford City & County Archive holds the nineteenth century records of the Lismore Estate. The Lismore Estate refers to the estates of the Dukes of Devonshire and relates to lands largely situated in the counties of Waterford and Cork. Lismore Castle was and remains the seat of the Dukes of Devonshire in Ireland. The Lismore Castle Papers contain records on the administration of the estate, including, records on the running of Lismore Castle and Gardens, the Castle Farm, the woods, mountain, Lismore Sawmills and the Blackwater Fishery. The collection also includes detailed records on the tenants of the estate, including, rental books, tenant application books and tenant correspondence. The estate was also involved in a number of major projects in counties Waterford and Cork, such as, the introduction of the railways. [waterfordcouncil.ie]

Six Files of routine correspondence relating to the estate which contains material relating to tithe rents, rents and notices to quit, c.3 February 1950-27 January 1955. For example:
Letter, 27 January 1955, to Mrs Brigid Kiely, 9 Harbour View, South Circular Road, Limerick, from solicitor, Edmund Carroll, Fermoy, on behalf of the Lismore Estate asking for the sum of 19/9, three years Tithe Rent Charge of part of Abbeyside Dungarvan, she is also to pay costs of 3/4.

Material relating to tenants and to the Duchess of Westminster's decision to purchase Fishing Rights, c.31 August 1954-17 October 1955.

Member's Share Ledger of Lismore Estate Company, records information under the headings of names, address, occupation, number of shares, date of registration of transfer, remarks, 30 April 1926-5 April 1939, includes for example:

Details of Adele Cavendish, (Lady Charles Cavendish), Lismore Castle, Lismore, County Waterford.

Copy Letter Book of the estate, containing general correspondence, 15 October 1941-27 January 1961, includes, for example, letter to Mrs O'Connell, Chapel Street Lismore, 2 March 1946, relating to the state of her roof, under the terms of her lease she is obliged to keep the property in repair.
