Collection | 1641 Depositions |
Collection Description | The 1641 Depositions (Trinity College Dublin, MSS 809-841) are witness testimonies mainly by Protestants, but also by some Catholics, from all social backgrounds, concerning their experiences of the 1641 Irish rebellion. The testimonies document the loss of goods, military activity, and the alleged crimes committed by the Irish insurgents, including assault, stripping, imprisonment and murder. This body of material is unparalleled anywhere in early modern Europe, and provides a unique source of information for the causes and events surrounding the 1641 rebellion and for the social, economic, cultural, religious, and political history of seventeenth-century Ireland, England and Scotland. Description | Resource is fully digitised. Sworn depositions by men and women (mainly Protestant settlers) of their experiences during the rebellion of 1641. Although now bound together, the documents were produced by five separate commissions ranging in date from 1642 to the mid 1650s. There are depositions from all thirty two counties. A substantial number of the deponents were widows whose husbands had been killed during the rebellion. MUN/LIb35/10/1-4 is an abstract and index of the volumes by William Gregory Hodson. The Depositions have been digitised and made available online, through the 1641 Depositions Project. The project began in 2007 and finished in September 2010. Hard copies of the depositions are being published, in 12 volumes, by the Irish Manuscripts Commission. |
