Collection DescriptionThis collection of papers relates to the Parsons family (Earls of Rosse) of Birr Castle, County Offaly, and dates from the 17th-20th century. Anthony Malcomson's Calendar of the Rosse Papers was published by the Irish Manuscripts Commission in 2008. Offaly History also provides a digital copy of the Calendar on its website (see link). A selection of the papers have been microfilmed and copied by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, see MIC/512 and T/3498.

The correspondence of the 6th Earl of Rosse include, for example, letters from his mother, Frances Lois Dowager Countess of Rosse; Daphne Fielding; his sister, Lady Bridget Parsons; his maternal grandmother Lady Beatrice Lister Kaye; Evelyn Waugh; Diane Fellowes; Laura Corrigan, the American hostess and philanthropist; 'Emerald' Lady Cunard; Diana Mitford; Maureen, Aileen, Honor, Evelyn and Mariga Guinness; Natica and Jean Lister Kaye; Florence Vaughan; Adeline, Countess de la Feld; Countess Orietta Borromeo d'Adda; Cassandra, Countess of Rosse; Alice Parsons and Evelyn Viscountess de Vesci, 1920s-1967.

Letters of the Dowager Countess, Viscountess de Vesci, are also contained in this collection and include for example, a letter from the Countess of Bandon regarding the destruction of Castle Barnard in County Cork, and her husband's kidnap and several letters relating to the government's responsibility for damage incurred to Birr Castle during occupation by the Irish Free State army, 1922-1924.
