Description | Letters from the Most Reverend Foley, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, includes: Letter - 'I find from the minutes of meeting that Sr H. Bellingham had left before any vote was taken and that two protestants not one voted with me whilst Stanley Harrington who was, as I thought, a popular representative was with the majority. Of course the majority were all voting for their own action in passing the Rule. I think it will be possible to make the Rule unworkable as regards the Schools that the Coms. Want to get rid of, that is schools with averages varying between 30 and 40 or 50, because in all such schools there is only one mistress and no one can consistently with reason maintain that such a school is suitable for infant boys. It is agreed upon on all hands that infants require constant supervision which one teacher cannot possibly give'. `The wholesale scheme of amalgamation would have the effect of reducing at least 500 principals to the condition of assistants whose salaries would be preserved during their lives but as soon as they disappear the arrangement would result in a considerable saving which would be devoted to Higher Grade schools and other schemes which though beneficial to cities and large towns in the North chiefly, would be of no use whatever to the districts upon which the savings would have been effected', 15 April 1905. |
