| Collection Description | The Murphy family of Clifton, Montenotte, Cork, was a junior branch of the Murphy family, brewers of Cork. Nicholas Murphy fifth son of Jeremiah Murphy lived at Clifton. His third son John Nicholas was created a Count of the Papal States and in 1855 married Alice Mary daughter of Daniel Leahy. The Alice Murphy collection consists of five 19th century photographic albums containing c.470 images of family, friends, the religious, royalty, places and costumes. Two albums concentrate on France and Switzerland respectively. Each contains images of various locations within the countries, people in costume (Swiss regions), friends and (perhaps) public figures not personally known to Countess Murphy. They are a mixture of bought images, reproductions of drawings and original photographs. The remaining albums concentrate on family and friends of Countess Murphy. | Description | The Countess Alice Murphy Collection has been fully catalogued by UCC Special Collections and Archives: 1. 1870. Album containing B&W images of members of the Murphy/Coltsmann families. Those most prominently featured are; John Murphy, his daughter Margaret May Murphy [later Coltsmann], and his wife Alice Murphy. All of the images in this album are surrounded with intricate boarders and symbols. 85 items. 2. 1870 - 1900. Album containing B&W images of French friends of the Murphy family, and both rural and urban French landscapes. The street-scapes primarily feature well known Paris streets and buildings, as well as parts of Marseilles and Nice. 102 items. 3. [1870 - 1900] Album containing B&W images of contains images of various locations within switzerland, both rural and urban, people dressed in the traditional costumes of the Swiss regions, family friends and public figures not personally known to Countess Murphy. They are a mixture of bought images, reproductions of drawings and original photographs. 96 items. 4. 1911. Album containing B&W photographs of Alice Murphy, and her extended family members. The album is decorated throughout with dried flora and fauna. Not all images are captioned, but those most prominently featured are; Alice Murphy, Nicholas Humphrey, May Coltmann nee Murphy, Sam Leahy, Frank Leahy, and Karl Coltsmann. The Leahy's are cousins of Alice Murphy, and Karl Coltsmann is a relative of Daniel Coltsmann, son-in-law of Alice Murphy. This album is not currently available to the public, due to its fragile nature. For further information, please contact the archive. 135 items. 5. [1899-1912] Album belonging to Margaret Murphy, later Coltsmann, daughter of Countess Alice Murphy. The album contains 42 black and white images of the Murphy and Coltsmann families. Also included in the album are images of religious and members of the clergy. It is possible that these were added to the album after it was donated to the presentation sisters. At the rear of the album is an in memorium card for Countess Murphy.
