Description | This collection divides into two groups, the first and larger dealing with the financial and estate affairs of the successive owners of the Mountrice estate, the second dealing with a trust established on the marriage in 1844 of Hetty Charity Rice and Rev. Thomas Richard Wrightson. Section A includes details of the marriage settlement, 1749, of Stephen Rice and Charity Borrowes [S6/21/1-21], and copy of the marriage settlement, 1772, of Stephen Rice and Margaret Meredyth [S6/21/7-8]. Also correspondence relating to an annuity for Frances Wall, sister of Joshua Rice, 1829, for example, Frances Wall to James Wall, 'I think Mr. Coates's opinion unfavourable to my signing . . . He says I may find it a difficult matter if I release to procure payment of my annuity during Mr. Rice's lifetime . . . As you seem more interested for your uncle than for me, you may show all this as my opinion . . . But of this be sure . . . That I will not sign away my right while I can help it', [S6/21/71-76]. Also correspondence about annuity and bond to Charity Carroll, sister of Joshua Rice, 1829 [S6/21/77-81]. Also details of financial and legal affairs of Hetty Wrightson (nee Rice), Sarah Rice and Lucy Rice, sisters of Stephen Richard Rice [S6/21/151-159], and of the deaths of Sarah Rice, 1900 and Lucy Rice, 1906 [S6/21/160-167]; and details of the legal affairs of Adelaide and Frederick William Butler, 1914-58 [S6/21/206-218]. The collection also includes a number of passing references to women in family wills, leases, loans, mortgages, etc. |
