DescriptionThis collection includes material relating to the Bryan family, which held property and lands in Dublin and in counties Tyrone and Offaly and elsewhere. It includes marriage settlement, 1778, of Robert Bryan and Sarah Elizabeth Butler [S6/20/13], and will of Sarah Elizabeth Bryan, 1821 [S6/30/15]; documents and correspondence relating to the marriage settlement of Hester Butler Bryan and Gustavus Robert Jones, 1855-60 [SC/30/22-33]; also correspondence on mortgage and insurance policy on the life of Mrs Hester Jones, 1858-60 [S6/30/34-44]. Also a number of references to women as beneficiaries of wills, in deeds of settlement, leases and renewals of lease and in business and personal correspondence, for example, Henry Newton, estate agent in County Tyrone, writing 15 January 1850, refers to the widow Mary O'Neill who has recently emigrated to America, 'leaving a number of helpless children behind her who were unable to labour the farm', and whom she is now assisting to join her [S6/30/100]; in other correspondence (for example, S6/30/84, 94), Newton refers to widespread poverty and agrarian unrest. On his personal affairs, he reports that he has married a farmer's daughter 44 years his junior, which has 'enraged' all his relations [S6/30/104].
