Description

The collection deals mainly with the property and legal affairs of the Hart-Synnott family. It includes details of the marriage settlements of Mark Synnott and Susanna Nugent, 1777 [S4/43/36]; and of Mark Seton Synnott and Anne Jane Synnott, 1844 [S4/43/47].

The collection also contains a section dealing with testamentary material relating to the estates of the six daughters and co-heiresses of Mark Seton Synnott [S4/43/78-91]. Includes will of Beatrice Mary Hart-Synnott (died 1947) [S4/43/80]; of Eva Charlotte Smith (d.1924) [S4/43/82]; of Cecilia Agnes Synnott (d.1928) [S4/43//84]; administration of the estate of Jane Rosalie Synnott, 'a person of unsound mind' who died in 1929 intestate [S4/43/85]; will of Dame Charlotte Augusta Hart (d.1936) [S4/43/88], and of Ada Maria Synnott (d.1941) [S4/43/91]. This section also contains the will of Mary Susanna Hart (d.1913), in which she requests that if her sons die without issue her estate at Ballymoyer, County Armagh should go to her daughters, who 'have done much valuable work in the upkeep of Ballymoyer during the bad times'. Stipulating that the income of her two daughters, if unmarried, should not be less than £400, she states that 'in passing on this responsibility for my daughters to my successors at Ballymayor, I wish to impress upon them how I and my husband and my mother before me have devoted almost all our resources to the upkeep of Ballymayor which for many years produced no net income' [S4/43/78].
