CollectionHerbert Papers
ReferenceS6/65 (1-124)
DescriptionThis collection is mainly concerned with the affairs of the Herbert family of Muckross, County Kerry. The largest element in the collection is the case of Anne Douse versus Henry Arthur Herbert and others [S6/65/1-152], concerning a claim by Douse, spinster, of Dublin, to three properties including an ironworks at Cloghereen. The case lasted over 26 years (1789-1815), apparently ending with the failure of Douse's case. According to Anne Douse's original complaint, the lands had been leased by her great-grandfather, she stated that she was a minor when she became entitled to the lands, and had no access to the relevant papers, which were in the hands of Herbert and others who had taken possession of the property. She charged that the possessors' design was to keep her ignorant of her true entitlement, and asked that the confederates be obliged to come to an account with her, that she be restored to the profits of the lands and have 'such further and other relief . . . as shall be agreeable to the rules of Equity' [S6/65/5].
