Description

The Royal College of Science for Ireland was founded in 1865 to supply 'complete course of instruction in science applicable to the industrial arts', and was absorbed into University College, Dublin in 1926, becoming the basis of its Science faculty. Surviving records include details of college administration, records of students and fellows and of student administration, information on courses and exams, staff, financial and library administration. Correspondence includes a letter from Lady Farrar, Dorking War Hospital, 1916, about the use of sphagnum moss as a surgical dressing [RCI/28]; letter about teaching posts for women graduates, 1916 [RCSI/331]. Also Attendance Books, 1912-1913, of women attendants, containing signatures, time of arrival and departure, absence and cause of absence where applicable [RCSI252-253]; also Attendance Books for women cleaners, 1917-1925, with similar information [RCSI/254-258]. Wages Lists, 1920-1923, record weekly wages for employees including women cleaners, noting name, number of days worked, rate per week, national health contribution and wages due [RCSI/80-82].
