Description | 3rd Report of Ardee Ragged School, listing the names of subscribers, including a large number of women and the amount donated, 1858, with an attached letter from Miss Susan Ellis, secretary and treasurer of the school, informing Beresford that a convent had been built in Ardee and asking for his assistance: 'All we want is money to enable us to contend against the efforts which are being made by the Priests to extend their influence: they having lately built a splendid nunnery and established a body of nuns who are unceasing in their efforts not only to retain their own people but to proselytise the poorer protestants in the place...We find the Ragged School a most effective means by which to preserve our own', 15 October 1858. |
