Description

A copy of a letter from the Armagh Guardian, signed by 'Neptune' which states, 'On a recent Sunday, I was quitting our Cathedral in the evening looking around me, when I trod upon the long tail of a lady's dress moving before me. The tread must, I fear, have been serious, for the lady looked round, I apologised, but I felt she had invited aggression by the long sweaping (sic) garment she had placed in my way. I had before observed several other ladies moving up the aisle, sweeping the flew (sic) of the church as it moved along, with their rich and costly trains. I could not avoid reflecting on the folly and the extravagance of this arrangement, which is said to be the "Fashion", which palliates and excuses every folly, and for which I fear there is no remedy ... Except to raise a dust in Church, and gather such in the streets ... I don't see much use in the pea-cock train system', 29 December 1876.
