Diaries, Volume 2: 1798-1802

Diary entry noting, 'This is the anniversary of my wedding. ...What a wretched thing it is to be separated, on such a day as this, from the dearest object of my life! From her who this hour 9 o['] c[loc]k this time 12 month entrusted the future destiny of her life in my hands! And her on whom the happiness of my life depends! May I make her as happy as she deserves, and happier she cannot be? May she and I long continue to live together in peace and happiness - and always recollect, as I do at present, this night 12 month with rapture of delight', 29 January 1800.
