Description

This collection consists entirely of printed material relating to the Irish labour and trade union movements. It provides an insight into Irish society from the late 19th to the mid-20th century, with particular reference to workers and the poor, and much of the material therefore is of direct or indirect relevance to women. For example, Trade Union Information, a monthly newsletter issued by the ITUC, 1950-70, covers topics such as working conditions, wage increases and social security, as well as women's earnings; also references to Jennie Dowdall, on platform at 1959 ITUC conference, photographs of Betty Sinclair, secretary, Belfast and District Trades Council, and Rosie Hackett; Labour Party policy statement (1979) on the status of women; copies of Labour News',1934-38, 1966; material relating to the Irish White Cross Society and 'Report of the enquiry into the housing of the working classes of the City of Dublin, 1939-43'.
