Description

Includes letters to James Ryan during his internment in 1916 from his sisters Phyllis, Teresa (Sister Stanislaus), Min and Chris, with family news, including information on the imprisonment of two other sisters Kit [Katherine] and Nell [Ellen] and discussion of political events; also letters from Katherine Brady, Madge Gahan, Frances Kelly ('I must be in the fashion now and write to one of the patriots'), Margaret ?, Mary Gray, Maudie Davin and ? Coyle; also from Kathleen Teebay, with reference to Mrs and Miss Pearse, Máirin Ní Ribhogh, Maura Power and Peg O'Sullivan. Other correspondents include Agnes O'Rahilly on her husband's imprisonment.
Also copy of a statement to be read at a women's anti-conscription meeting, letters and resolutions on the ratification of the Treaty, including one to Ryan from his sister Nelly Ryan: 'Though the terms may not be what the country deserves, still under the existing circumstances ratification seems the only course possible', and letter to Mairin Ryan in support of the Treaty; also correspondence to Ryan while on hunger strike in the Curragh including a telegram from Máire Ní Raghailaigh; also copy of letter from Mary McSwiney to republican supporters in America (1922), and details of hunger strike by her, her sister Ann, Mary Comerford and Miss Humphries.

Also includes letters to Máirin Cregan (later Ryan) from Sean MacDiarmada and Austin Stack (1915-1918); notes from James Ryan in the Four Courts to Mairin Ryan; also letters to Máirin Ryan from Eamon de Valera, outlining her credentials as a representative of the Department of Foreign Affairs, with instructions on her presentation to the International Committee of the Red Cross, and with reference to Dr Lynn and Lily O'Brennan; from Kathleen O'Brennan and others, including Katherine, her sister-in-law, and Muriel McSwiney.
