Description | Box containing family correspondence, c.37 letters, mainly letters between cousins, aunts, etc., to the Overend family, cOctober 1888-c.1970. Includes three letters describing their reaction after the 1916 Rising. Example: 5 May 1916 letter to Lily Overend from Fanny L.M. Butler 'Hope some of the postcards reached you to reassure you we are all safe, all safe in this quarter, thank God for another night of peace, hearts raised by the sight of a tram and the sound of a railway whistle, whole thing like a horrible dream - hundreds of soldiers in town, the Masonic Hall, Town Hall Royal Dublin Society all full and we have such nice ones all about here and in our garden - such a comfort - cannot forget what we owe the military but the poor old town is destroyed'. |
