Description | Minutes and accounts of the Ralph Macklin Sunday and Thursday Poor Schools, 1833-1927. The first meeting held in the Vestry Room of St Andrew's 1833, under the terms of the will of Ralph M (not given). Matters discussed: hiring of master and mistress; authorisation of repairs and alteration to house at No 3 Fleet Street (prior to building a new school) purchase of perquisites (these are listed in detail: for the Female School two forms, 2 dozen New Testaments, 3 dozen 2nd part spelling books, 2 dozen reading books and registry); consideration of the system of education to be adopted. Fees paid by pupils, amounting to œ5 0s 5d for the first five months. Shoes, bonnets and caps, later frocks and pinafores, were awarded to the most deserving children 'taking into account the time they had been at the school and the regularity of their payments'. At Christmas, 1843, 42 boys and 88 girls received boots and clothing, and books, as rewards for diligent attendance and good conduct during the year. 10 volumes of material. |
