Description | Archival box 2, contains, for example: 7 letters from Mrs Whittaker, Sligo to John Hay, referring to her religious beliefs and local Methodist congregation, 1843-1848. For instance, she notes, 'I am so glad my correspondence is thought of any worth but I am sorry to say that I really do not think the cause of Methodism [is] prospering amongst us - the Church clergy are active devoted men and watch over their flocks as those who shall give account - and as our increase is not likely to come from Papist ranks, I see not side from which our flocks can gather. I am told in Dublin there is a decline in congregational attendance also from the same causes and also from the apathy', 16 September [?1848]. A letter from Mrs C.E. Lowe to J.A. Duke, 1909. A letter from George Alley to Miss Davidson, Mayfield, thanking her for her subscription of œ16 'convey our very grateful acknowledgements to all the persons concerned, ...in tiding over the difficulties - partly occasioned by the general expense of living, at this time, by chiefly by repeated illness - not only over which we had no control, but for which no special provision is made in any ordinary circuit allowances. ...Mrs. Alley requests me to apologize for her manner this evening - but she felt so much in the matter of your kindness she was not herself', 9 January 1873. Extracts of letters by Mrs L., 1808. A letter from Samuel Collier to Miss Kirkly, 1910. A letter from John Hornbrook to Miss Kirkly, 1915. A letter from Henry Haigh to Mrs McVickers, 1912. A letter from Miss Susan Wesley, daughter of Charles Wesley to her mother, referring to a visit to an unnamed family, 'It was gratifying to know that they remember'd me with much affection in all their visits and letters. But I believe Ingratitude is rare among the young: Parents indeed may influence their Children by their Hatred and Prejudices when they are not at an age to judge of Character, but I have seldom seen an instance where kindness was forgotten, and therefore have more cause to bear it, when it falls to my share', no date. |
