Description | Notice to the Publick, concerning a Loan-fund. [2 pages printed]. Proposal for establishing a charity for 'lending out small sums to the Industrious Poor, and receiving it from them by weekly payments'. Arguments include: 'A widow has daughters, they, on a small pittance could find means of support, but where is that pittance? Shame is a lock on the tongue, they are afraid to speak; want appears in all its frightful dress: the desponding mother becomes an advocate against the weakened virtue of the daughter, and prostitution is made the price of bread.' |
