Description

'A Memorial concerning Mrs Coningsby' addressed to Thomas, Earl of Wharton, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

Gives ancestry of Susanna Coningsby [English]: 'Her Father was active in the late revolution, an officer in their late Maj.tys First Regiment of Guards'. `Her mother in the time of the late King James was perverted to the Romish Religion...and marryed a second husband, one Mr O'Hara'. She sent for her daughter (left in a nunnery) who, travelling to Ireland, was proposed to by Mr Coningsby (son of Lord Coningsby) in the stage coach. She refused, but he 'gave out that she was his marryed wife'. Her relations persuaded her to comply to secure her reputation, and she, not yet 15, did so. Shortly after she was delivered of a boy 'to which child the Archbishop & _ were Godfathers.' The Lord Coningsby is displeased, and she is dependent on her mother and step-father. The petition asks that, as she was so young, and her child will bear a title if he lives, she be taken into Her Majesty's Charitable consideration 'until such time as God shall incline the hearts of her husband's relations to have compassion on her and her infant...'

A note in another hand: 'Mrs Coningsby is a lady of such beauty, as is capable to engage the affections of a gentleman much more experienced than Mr Coningsby pretends to be .. .The case seems to deserve some pity...'
