Description

Translation made in 1899 by Lord Dufferin and Ava of a pleading in the Court of the Chatelet over the confinement in Paris by her mother of Miss Sydney Hamilton, an heiress who had married, aged 15, Mr Beresford, an English clergyman, at Gretna Green and given birth to a son. She did eventually return to her 'ravisher'.

Sydney Hamilton was the daughter of Gawen Hamilton of Killileagh, heir to the [extinct] earldom of Clanbrassil, and Jane Hamilton nee Rowan, (See Ms 4915).

This is a very full and colourful account of the courtship, elopement and illegal marriage.
Contains also a consideration of the crime of rape, or seduction, and the penalties under the French and the English laws.
