DescriptionThe Church Mission Society's (or Irish Society), founded 1834, promoted the Knowledge of the Scriptures to the Irish speaking population by means of a Mission Estate, with Irish language schools and church services.
Accounts and letters, including those from clergymen on Achill referring to '40 or 60 converts' [1876], others to the management and mismanagement of the estate. Testimonials on behalf of applicants for agency, correspondence about Fr Michael Conway P P's attempts to build a school on Inisbeagle for Catholic children.
Letters from Jane Dent living in Manchester to her brother Paul in Dublin on unemployment, the deaths of children, the harshness of people in Bradford.
Applications for assistance or deferral of rent payment. Fundraising: after the death of the Mission's founder, Rev. Edward Nangle, his widow Sarah continued to appeal for funds for the islanders, (collecting, for example, '60 Articles of Clothing from the Parsonstown Needle-workers Association per Miss Twiss'), organised the collection of orders for crochet-edging and knitting done by Achill people, and particular favours for individuals, for example, for the teacher of needle work in the Dugort adult female school.
