Collection DescriptionColleen Bawn. This collection of letters and official reports relate to the police investigations on the murder of Ellen Hanley, whose body was found washed up on the banks of the River Shannon on 6 September 1819. It was this tragedy that inspired Bouccicault's play 'Colleen Bawn' and Gerald Griffin's, 'The Collegians', the 'Benedicts' and the 'Lily of Killarney'. This particular collections comprising of facsimilies of originals presented to Liam Raftias by MacLysaght.

Fitzgerald, (Publican) Caslteisland, County Clare to the Chief Secretary expressing his opinion as to who should be the right receipient of the reward money, 'The Truth is, Sir I am the person who was the cause of his arrest and if you take my advice you will give me the money', 11 June 1820.
