Collection Description | From Castlegar, County Galway, the Burke family were involved in the independence movement. Fr Tom served as chaplain to the Galway Brigade of the Irish Volunteers/IRA while his sister Margaret was a member of Cumann na mBan. Margaret played an active role in the War of Independence and being on the Anti-Treaty side, she was arrested and interned in the North Dublin Union Internment Camp. [UCD Archives] |

Description | Papers of the Burke family of Castlegar, County Galway: Margaret Burke, member of Cumann na mBan, Fr Tom Burke, IRA chaplain, and Catherine (Burke) O'Donovan. Includes correspondence and reports mainly relating to the war of independence and civil war, 1916-1924, and organisation of the Volunteers in the Galway area. Margaret Burke opposed the Treaty and was imprisoned in Kilmainham and North Dublin Union internment camp in the spring and summer of 1923. Her letters are about prison, the food and treatment, rules governing letters and parcels, her fellow-prisoners, for example, a fancy-dress competition won by Éamon de Valera, there is also a reference to Mrs Nora Connolly O'Brien. |
