DescriptionGeorge Roberts papers consist mainly of correspondence : thirteen letters from Augusta, Lady Gregory, Miss Horniman, Padraic Colum, Ella Young, William Boyle, C E Montagu, E McLysaght, etc., 1903-1918. Mostly about books, plays and proposed meetings. Also letters from Maire Garvey (later Mrs Roberts) to Frank Fay, Mr Cousins and others c1906-1910. To her sister (?) 1910: 'I suppose you heard of all this pother about Yeats Introduction. He had treated Roberts in what I can only call a scandalous manner. I don't mind anything a man can do in fighting with another so long as he confines himself to the rules of the game, but to run around behind backs and do all he could to injure the other man..... is nothing but meanness'. Later she complains that she is not engaged to be married to Yeats and holds no brief for him.
Letters to Maire Garvey c1904-1913, from Padraic Colum, Jane Yeats, George Russell and others, some about setting up the Abbey Theatre. Also from Sara Allgood and F J Fay.
Articles and letters on the first production of the 'Playboy of the Western World' with references to Synge's death.
Portions of play scripts and some Abbey postcards (unidentified) and programmes, including the Aonach, 1909 art exhibition catalogue: a number of works by women including Neili Ni Brian, S Rosamund Praeger, Evelyn Gleeson, Freda Perrot , Constance Gore-Booth, Miss Starkey, Lily Williams, Clare Marsh, Mrs Sinclair, Estella Solomons, Eva Hamilton, Alice Latimer and Helen North Johnson (with prices).
