Notebooks, the first dated at Chester, June, 1852, makes comparisons with Ireland, admiration for the rhododendrons, and a sermon at the Cathedral. The second notebook has gardening tips: '..the best way of destroying the green insect on roses is to make a solution for Tobacco water not too strong...', drawing of a French summerhouse. Anecdotes on religious themes, hymns and a poem 'written on a soldier's grave by his own desire' ending: 'and does the Pope confess? Oh yes. To God. And does God charge the Pope? No, quoth the priest - he charges nothing. Then, God's the best - God's able to forgive and always willing, To him I shall confess and save my shilling'. Copied letters and journal entries dated Paris, 1853: recounting among other subjects - food, clothes, her own and her fellow travellers low opinion 'of the slovenly, dirty ways of French ladies'. And: 'It is a melancholy reflection that Protestant parents are not alive to the Folly of educating their children on the Continent - they are willing to sacrifice their innocence for a good French accent'.
