Description

Women's Branch of the Confraternity of the Passion founded in January, 1885. Two volumes of minutes cover the periods from 1885 to 1900 and 1906 to 1922.

First meeting appointed officers and designated Spiritual Director. Members to attend the 8 o'clock mass on the first Sunday of each month 'which will be offered for the spiritual and temporal interests of all the members'. Members asked to wear their ribbons and medals, and to attend at the meeting at 4 p m on the same day. 'It was proposed that each Member already clothed with the sacred habit should pay the small contribution of threepence each month for the support of the Confraternity...Father Sebastian advised the Members to wear their habits only at the private meetings. Activities include processions, annual excursions and other social events, including ceilidh's, and fund-raising activities were frequent: Father Sebastian 'exhorted the Sisters to defray their share in the remaining debt on the Confraternity ball'. Collections also made for the support of distressed members, Guilds were also founded.

An early Minute Book is entitled 'The Female Branch of the Confraternity etc.', 1885-1890 has been partially copied into volume 1 above. It contains in addition, however, lists of names, male and female, in the 'Apostleship of Prayer', 1899. Some dates and parts of the text are slightly different.
