DescriptionHomily addressed by [?Eleanor Trant] to her daughtger [?Marie] on conduct, religion, etc.
'I seize a moment of leisure to address you my drst child tho' you are now at an age which incapacitates you from understanding one word which is contained in these pages, but I trust the day will come when you will read them with attention ... The first great principle I wish to inculcate in you is the love of religion; it is the foundation of all happiness in this & the next world . Consider those as your best friends who take the trouble to instruct you in your Duty to God, your neighbour & yourself ... You must therefore from your infancy accustom yourself to implicit obedience. You must never dispute the authority of your Parents or teachers & always suppose that tho' their commands may to your inexperience appear unreasonable yet that in the end you will reap the benefit of following the advice of those who are older and wiser than yourself & that they can be actuated by no motive but affectgion & good wishes for you in any thing they undertake'.
