Description | Large leather bound, illuminated volume presented to Mrs Caroline Anne Gamble, founder of the Gamble Library, Belfast [now Union Theological College Library] by the ladies' of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, with an address, May 1879. The address states, 'In the name of many of the women of Ireland, we are desirous of giving you some simple expression of our admiration of your character, feeling as we do grateful for your generosity to our Church, and for the zeal you have shown in promoting every object that commends itself to your judgement as likely to extend the Redeemer's Kingdom, or to relieve the suffering. In Ulster especially your name is enwreathed with a trefoil of benefactions - religious, educational and charitable. ...You have aided us in our efforts to make the manses of our Church comfortable at home, and our Mission Buildings substantial and suitable amid the Heathen. Your bounty also towards the orphans of our Ministers has helped to comfort the fatherless and widows in their affliction, caused their hearts to sing for you. We have only to add with an enthusiastic unanimity of rare occurrence, we your Presbyterian Sisters in faith and sympathy, beg your assistance of the accompanying Album, as a slight but tangible evidence of the regard and esteem entertained for you throughout this Emerald Isle. And it is our earnest prayer that your life of generosity and usefulness may be long upon the earth'. |
