'A man ... was brought to me - from De Beer's force - had got a fortnight's leave to go home ... While there English surprised the town. He was taken. Of all taken there - 79 of them - only 16 bore arms, men like him home on leave. The rest children of 12, old men of 70, 32 women & children. Ten of the women were mothers. He was put in prison. Five troopers looted his wife's home ... took every particle of food from it & œ5, all the money she had'.
