DescriptionA report on the work of four fully qualified Deaconesses, trained in Deaconess House and employed, including, 'Miss Stevenson as Town Missionary of Ballymena...to visit the sick and poor and careless of the town...The reports of Miss Stevenson's work are very satisfactory, as it is felt that a trained woman can enter into the home life of the poor, and render help in many ways to those who have heavy burdens to carry.' The report continues that another Deaconess, Miss Small 'has been appointed to the Irish Mission of our Church to engage...in colportage work in country districts. This is a new departure in woman's work; and the result of this experiment will be awaited with interest. ...The Girls' Hostel has been full during the year, and is proving a much-needed "home" for young women of limited means engaged in the city.' The report also states that in order to extend work of this nature the Deaconess and Social Service Guild of the Presbyterian Church of Ireland was to be established, 9 June 1911.
