DescriptionThe report of the committee investigating offences against women and children stated that 'one new piece of legislation...our Church should insist upon, and that is, that the Bastardy Laws of England and Scotland should apply to Ireland. It is too bad to meet with case after case of girls, as much sinned against as sinning, having to support their child, whilst the father is absolutely free from responsibility. Many girls in service, earning £14 or £15 yearly as wages, have to give 5/- a week towards the support of their child. The fathers should be compelled to, at least, bear a share', 11 June 1915.
