Description | Enlarged typescript copy extracts from a magazine started by women workers in Mackie's factory during the First World War, named 'The Turret Lathers' after part of the shell manufacturing process, 1916-1917. For example, one anonymous extract entitled 'Thoughts in a Munitions Factory' notes, 'Midst the laughter and the singing I often wonder why am I with others engaged in this awful occupation. To see the rows of shells, so innocent looking, yet made for a specific and terrible purpose...it is difficult to think of women in the 20th Century engaged in such an occupation, but then we must think of the havoc wrought by our enemies', December 1916. |
