Description | Miscellaneous papers, includes: Letters to Emily Napier, 1824-1852 Letter of Lady Louisa Conolly to the Duke of Richmond on the state of Ireland, 1780, 'I shall only add that the division of the inhabitants of Ireland into three parties, make it difficult to preserve its own internal peace, and of course much more so that attachment between the two countries so much to be wish'd for. The Dissenters profess the most invincible hatred to the [King] and English ministers on account of the American war that can be conceived, and at the same time make use of, and derive great profit from Doctor Franklin's papers to protect their ships from French and American privateers. The Catholics at present are prudent in acquiescing to the Government, but can it be supposed, that if any confusion should arise, they would not seize the favourable opportunity of being restored to their original fortunes, with such powerful friends as French and Spaniards to support them? Surely, nobody could blame them if they did. The third party, of the Church of England, most certainly must wish to be quiet, but their numbers are too inconsiderable to suppose they would be allow'd a choice'. The volume also contains 'Mrs Woffington's petition to his G...e the L..d L......t of Ireland', dated 1746. 'Let others with as small pretensions, Teize you for places and for pensions. I scorn a pension or a place, My sole design's upon your G...e; The sum of my petition's this, I claim, my Lord, an annual kiss'. |
