Description | Letters of Richard Shackleton and Elizabeth Carleton prior to their marriage, 1752-1755, for example: Elizabeth Carleton, from Dublin, 1752: 'By thy acceptance of my letter, thou encourages me to write on in my old simple manner, without much order or connection, & if thou wert not just as my Brother in the freedom of truth, I wou'd be asham'd to send such incorrect pieces, to a man of so much learning, & of such nice distinguishing faculties of mind ... I hope I am as thou expects, sufficiently reserv'd in imparting thy letters, or any of my frds, but sometimes I think there may be service in reading a paragraph in a letter, which may be done, without letting it be known who it is from'. |
