The story of a young woman who returns from London to her Catholic home in Belfast when she is faced again with the old conflicts which caused her to emigrate. Through Maeve's eyes we get an outsider's view of the Northern problem and of the restricted role women play in Republicanism. There is conflict between feminism and the male ideology which only allows women roles as 'martyred mothers'. Personal recollections, stories and myth play and important part in the film and emphasise Maeve's distancing from the past and the politics which depend so much on it. 'Maeve' directly engages with the issues of contemporary life in the North.
