Description

The section of this collection dealing with personal affairs, 1879-1920, and includes family and other correspondence of Terence MacSwiney, with references to Mary MacSwiney (mother), Mary (Minnie) MacSwiney, Katie MacSwiney, Peg MacSwiney and Nan MacSwiney (sisters), Kate (aunt) and Muriel MacSwiney (nee Murphy) (wife). It also includes a large volume of correspondence between Terence MacSwiney (from various jails) and Muriel MacSwiney, with references to political and personal matters, including Muriel's pregnancy and the birth of their daughter, Maire Óg, in 1918.

The collection also includes correspondence between Terence MacSwiney and Ina M. Walsh (later Sr Benignus), Bri and France Walsh, Alice Milligan, Mrs Murphy (mother-in-law), Tilly Fleischmann, K. Shine and Lady Emily Fitzgerald-Arnott.

The section devoted to MacSwiney's hunger strike and death includes an manuscript diary kept by Annie MacSwiney (sister), during the last week of his life (18-28 October 1920), photographs of Muriel MacSwiney, Maire Óg MacSwiney and of Irish-American women's demonstration in New York in 1920.

Also 'Miss Mary MacSwiney's reply to the Home Office', 'An open letter from the wife and sisters of the Lord Mayor' to the Democratic and Republican candidates for the US Presidency, a copy of Mary MacSwiney's letter to Edward Shortt, Secretary of State for Home Affairs.
The papers also include newspaper cuttings with references to Muriel MacSwiney and Mary MacSwiney.

Material produced after Terence MacSwiney's death includes a poem, 'When I was a little girl', by Alice Milligan, typescript copies of 2 lectures and notes by Mary MacSwiney, and 2 printed copies of 'The story of Tóirdhealbhach Mac Suibhne (Terence MacSwiney)' by his sister Eithne, from her biography A life of Tóirdhealbhach Mac Suibhne in preparation at the time (25 October 1930).
