Description

'Ireland a Nation':

Production Company: Gaelic Film Company

Director: William MacNamara

Historical drama tracing the social and political events in Ireland from 1798 uprising to the 1914 Home Rule legislation. The first section is missing so the film begins with Grattan's Parliament. Scenes within the film include depiction's of the famine and emigration to north America which proved highly emotive to audiences in 1914. Interspersed with newsreel footage of events, such as a 1914 Home Rule meeting, the tone of the film is strongly nationalistic. One inter-title proclaims the sentiment - 'England's difficult is Ireland's opportunity'.
