Description | Miscellaneous collection relating to the Crawford and Beamish families, Cork. The collection holds much material relating to legal cases many of which involve women. It includes a list of legal cases concerning [W. Carmichael 30 Harwick Street]. The collection includes, for example: 7 May1781, George Starmand to Catherine Smith relating to a mortgage which he believed had been long since paid. Bond of indemnity from Mrs Barbara French to Mr William Crawford for having purchased her late husband's concern in Merchant's Quay and Irish street in trust for her, no date, 18th century.
Documents granting power of attorney, in instances initiated by women, for example, 'I Janet Crawford late of Lakelands in the County of Cork but now of Hollywood House in the County of Wicklow Spinster Do make depute constitute and appoint John Crew Chetwood Townsend of Woodside in the Count of Cork Esquire my true and lawful Attorney for me...,' 13 August 1845
Letter Book of Richard Pigott Beamish which includes letters to his aunt, 1 September 1861, on the subject of the 'strong liking [which] appears to have sprung up between Capt. John de Courcey Meade and dearest Emily'; Piggot considers Meade of good character but not of sufficient means to `enable him to support a wife in anything like the mode in which Emily has been educated. In the case of a remarkably quiet, prudent, and unartistic woman this might be got over ...'. A similar letter, 12 September 1861, refers to Captain Meade's sister, Mary, \who appears to have slept at Q town' and who Pigott considers a `bad companion for young people'. A letter, 13 December 1861, to a Mrs Green refers to the financial result of last years 'Sale of Work' and makes reference to sectarian questions. The Letter Book also includes letters from Piggot to: His sister, Annie, 21 February 1862, 25 February, 1862 His mother, 6 January 1866
A second Letter Book contains, among others, a letter from Piggot to his mother, 27 November 1856 and a letter March 13, 1858 which `was not sent being rather too sharp,' concerning her refusal to send back his letters and the use of his letters against him by his father. Includes letters to Richard Pigott Beamish from: His sister Annie, 30 April 1862, 4 May 1862 His mother, 3 January 1866, 7 May 1862, 14 January 1866, 10 October [?]
The collection also includes correspondence between Richard Pigott Beamish and his cousin, Hilda Beamish, relating to the will of the latter's mother, Alice Marie Beamish, December 1893 - January 1894. There are 23 boxes in total. |
