Description

Cloyne Diocese. Dr McKenna's Visitation Notes, c.1785, with an edited typescript by Father Wilson. The latter comprises of extracts from the visitation notes giving details of, for example, the manner in which the penal law is enforced in each parish, the name of the priest, the number of midwives and teachers in each parish.

For example, Aghada, '3 midwives. Idle girls Mary and Ellen Daly, Joanna Mahony, Miss Walker, Miss Sisk, Miss Halmes. Peg Kerby kept. This district noted for girls of pleasure [sic]'.

Ballhea, 'Has 4 schoolmasters and 3 mistresses who teach Xtian doctrine. 3 midwives'.

Ballyclough, 'Mary Shanagan, Ellen Sullivan and Peg Brien concubines excommunicated.'

Castletownroche, 'Js Quinlan and Mary McCarthy married within the prohibited degrees, which they concealed from the late M. Walsh; not dispensed with. Bridget Birmingham adulteress and Ellen Carthy has two bastards. Redmond Barry and Mary Murphy married within the forbidden degrees; dispensed. Michael Shanahan and Joan Slyne married within the forbidden degrees, which they concealed'.

Doneraill, 'Margaret Lyne a publick concubine'.
