Description | A personal journal kept by a teacher, unidentified, resident in Skye, 1867 with records of folk life and descriptions of the locals, for example, 28 February 1867, he casts himself back to when he `came upon a woman who was resting against an old turf wall, and near her was a creel filled with Sea-ware. She was weeping, said she was very tired, and had been taunted by some of the women of the place, who always decried her habits, and the unusual system of agriculture she adopted. She regularly planted potatoes which seldom appeared above ground and if they did it was to grow as weeds, uncared for.' A number of pages are devoted to describing this woman and the journal also contains references to the writer's own family including the female members. |
