Collection Description | Mary Lavin was born to Irish parents in East Walpole, Massachusetts, in 1912. She returned to Ireland with her family when she was ten years old. She attended a Loreto Convent School before studying English and French in UCD. After receiving an MA in English in 1936, Lavin wrote her first short story, entitled Miss Holland. Her first collection of short stories - Tales from Bective Bridge - was published in 1942, winning the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Her short stories featured in many publications, including the New Yorker and The Atlantic. She was elected a Saoi by members of Aosdána in 1992. |
