DescriptionWomen's Meeting:
Epistles to and from London, Yearly Meeting, 1671-1723.

The epistles follow a formulaic response to queries which are to be responded to by the friends attending each meeting. They contain an annual series of epistles or religious debates on marriage, the behaviour of widows, care of the children of widows, the suitability of marriage, women friends work in the community, the condition of the church in the province and the apparel and behaviour of young women friends.
Examples of the type of replies given to the queries are as follows:

'And also you to look into and confer on whether there be any woman who professed truth, y take upon them y office of a midwife, nurse who has the option to be employed by y world, whether they keep truth and keep up their testimony for y Lord in faithfulness and whether any such be forgotten and their gossiping, if any be fond [sic] to practise such things they are to be admonished', 2 September 1677.

'From our yearly women's meeting in Dublin. Description of the proper clothing which should be worn by Friends', 11 March 1683.

8, 10, 11 March 1697, From the yearly women's meeting in Dublin. Matters put before the women's meeting:
'First concerning Midwives, that if any friend should be capable of undertaking that office that they should take care in their places to hear their testimony against the world's [?] and fashions, not to receive the gossips, money nor to be present nor any way concerned at y sprinkling of y child, likewise not to dress y infant against that time up in finery as is the custom of the world's people.'
'Thirdly, Its further desired that Friends do not put their children to people of the world to learn needless works y truth do not allow of; Its also desired that such friends as wear broad scarves do wear them so as not to let them hang below their wastes behind after the world's fashion.'

8, 9, 10 March 1716: It is earnestly recommended that women friends be diligent in visiting families in the love of truth the warmth of which love we hope may raise such a lively zeal in them that they may be in some measure helpful to cleanse sion from her present dross'.
