Description

Women's Meeting:
Epistles from Limerick Monthly Meetings and elsewhere, 1695-1828. Includes copy of 'Sundry Written Epistles', belonging to Limerick Meeting.

Volume is predominantly concerned with discussions of Friends' religious doctrine, including a transcript of an epistle from John Banks, dated 1695, advice to younger women friends, encouragement to the women to 'promote the truth' in the world, thanks to God for the bountiful harvest, references to epistles received from London, Philadelphia, Ulster, queries received to the Yearly Meeting of Men Friends regarding provision for poor, education etc., the decline in enthusiasm of Friends, the well being of Friends' children, etc. Examples of the type of information recorded at the meetings:

8 July 1735 'We have received the company of two English Friends Sarah Jackson and Sible Alkinson, whose service has been comfortable to us in this our meeting and particularly advised cutting and setting out the hair, which we desire may be minded in every meeting'.

11 May 1737 'Several things have been under our consideration in this meeting and spoke to which is a grief to the honest hearted particularly that of powdering and laying out the hair so much to be seen likewise tuckers like ruffles about the neck too much now in fashion and we should be glad our younger women would be condescending to lay such and other things aside, which are a burden to the faithful'.

17-22 April 1815 'We feel the vacancies left in the militant church by the removal of many dedicated servants, who have been called from work, yet we are also comforted in the prospect of a succession of faithful standard bearers who are prepared and preparing to receive the descending mantle, we desire that these may abide closely with their Lord and Master in the simple obedience to his teachings.'
